In a social environment, what does 'self confidence' even mean?

When people say that those with self confidence find themselves in good company or that they get a lot of attention of from the opposite sex, what is the word 'self confidence' even referring to? Is it simply liking yourself? Is it not caring about what people think of you? Is it the belief that you are safe from ostracism?

This really annoys me because just about everyone I know tells me that I need more self confidence but I don't know what they're talking about. I like myself, I don't think I'm deficient in any way compared to anyone else, I don't feel like normality has any inherent value.

I need to know what it is, because I've heard it said that if you don't have it, people will pick on you for no reason, and I have actually noticed that I am often being picked on. What is it and why does it provoke certain reactions in people and why should I care? And more importantly if it is something that can actually be described, how can I achieve it?

Final thought,
I don't see why I should even associate with people who treat me differently based on how much of it I have, and I think I'm right to be cynical of such people and cautious of what random and irrational things they might do next based on what kind of look I have on my face
 
Self confidence is not my forte but here goes:
Self confidence is perceived as a way you walk, a way you talk, the way you look at people. The look is~ If someone looks at you that way and you are lacking 'confidence' it will show. That gives then gives them the go ahead, that they can pick at you.

Self confidence is all perception. Say you are not self confident at all, no on ever has to see that.You can think you are great, that to me is a form of self confidence. Although just because you think you are great doesn't mean it will show. Public self confidence looks like arrogance to me. Self confidence is thinking well of yourself, not highly but well. Self confidence to others is a way you act.

I don't really associate with people that are wrapped up in things like this. I find it best not to.
 
Means the person is able to comfortably be themselves in a social situation without anxiety and without fear of opinions or stress over their appearance .

So NOT the people wondering if their outfit makes them look fat or if a hair is out of place or they only say very shallow polite things for fear of not being popular .

The self confident Never worry about being popular or think of it as an issue at all .

Also said , the self confident can walk with paupers or kings and is at ease either way .

ps: about the picked on thing , Is this high school ?
Because teens at that age can be lame lame lame as the testosterone kicks in .

Unfortunately , the better response might be "bite me punk"
But this might require subsequently kicking ass After you're attacked .
