Importing a sony handycam to a mac?

I can import video's from my camera to my mac via imovie, but it cuts down the quality a ton from when it's on the camera...is there a way to import it another way? i.e. fiewire

I have a Macbook (not newest, the non-plastic unibody one) and a sony handycam DCR-SX40
