So my little brother didn't come home last night with my parents car. So we are trying to call him on his cell, of course no answer. He's not at any of his friends house that we know of. So it got me thinking, I know cars and cell phones can be traced via the police but what programs are available for consumers? His phone is pretty basic, so I probably wouldn't be able to do much with his, but are there programs out there to track cell phones.

I'd hate to call the police at this point, because if it ends up being nothing it will be a big hassel. I remember reading an article about Sprint that has something like this, that when someone is coming to pick you up it will tell you how far away they are. Any ideas?
 
There are services out there that allow consumers to do this... disney mobile, for example, has the ability for parents to track their kids whereabouts (Disney Mobile is a Sprint MVNO I belive). But for your regular Joe that hasn't signed up for these? Or for most networks? There's not much you can do.

It IS possible for cell phone companies to see where a phone is based on tower pings, and at least get an idea of the general vicinity, but this is usually only done in special circumstances (such as the recent trace of a ping from the Kim family cell phone when they were lost in Oregon).

If your little brother is missing, the police really should be contacted, since they would need to be involved for the cell companies to do a triangulation anyway, in most cases.

Location is tracked by the cel towers based on the incoming and outgoing calls. I believe this is the method that law enforcement uses.
Id say call the cops if its been over 24 hours.
