can someone please tell me why the Space Race was so important during the Cold War and why also how it ended and when. Thanks this is not my homework. Thanks

The US and the SU were competing on many different levels, including space. When Sputnik was launched in 57, the SU was "ahead." As a reaction, US high school science programs in the US were beefed up and science education was stressed.. And when Kennedy announced in the early 60's that it would be the goal of the US to put a person on the moon within a decade, the challenge only got more serious.
