Implications of having no gmail account

I recently followed advice given in a different thread http://is.gd/dhpjm concerning re-assigning my main gmail account to a different one, to that which I originally entered.

I successfully deleted the original, but sadly whenever I try to assign a different gmail account, it always fails with a message saying "A reliable connection to google servers could not be established" or similar words. This is certainly not my phone being unable to connect to the Internet, as I can connect happily from other applications.
I suppose the server may be down, but this has gone on for over 24hrs, so it seems unlikely.

Would anyone know how to get the connection to google active again?

I am considering a factory reset, but the implications of having no gmail account do not seem to be that serious - it means (obviously) no main gmail account, and no access to the marketplace. Everything else seems to work though.

I am trading off the effort of re-installing all my apps and preferences vs the inconvenience of no access to updates / new apps.

I'm using an HTC Hero, BTW

Sounds like the same issue I originally hit with my (UK) HTC Hero. I neglected to setup the gmail account when prompted during first setting up of the handset. When I went back to do it later, I got the same error you are seeing. It was a known issue and the only way around it was a factory reset.

Yeah, mines a UK T-Mobile Touch G2.

So I'm looking down both barrels of a factory reset, eh? How inconvenient

So the FR worked did it?

I was worried I would carry out the FR and still have no account or means of creating one!

Yes, essentially a bug.

The factory reset worked perfectly. Although before doing so, I had already entered my entire contacts database (manually). And here's where the Catch-22 started.

I wanted to backup that db before the reset but was obviously unable to contact the market to install MyBackup. So I had to download it manually. But then I need to get hold of an app installer to actually install it - which itself needed to be installed. So, how to install the app installer app, without any app installer.

What I ended up doing was downloadng the Android SDK, setting USB debugging mode to "on", and installing the app installer via adb. I was then able to install MyBackup, backup the contacts db and restore it without issue after the reset. Could have just installed MyBackup via adb of course but just decided to check out the app installer at the same time.

Painful, but saved me re-entering my contacts manually for a second time.

Happy to help out if you need to go down this road.

J.

Thanks for the offer! I'm hoping (as probably many others are too) that we are due an iminent Android version update, so I was hanging fire for that to appear.

I was assuming that the upgrade would involve flashing the rom, and essentially factory reseting the device in any case. So, hoping not to have to go through the same procedure twice in close sucession!

Mind you, it'll probably take them until Xmas to sort the upgrade out
