Recently, every time I heard about 3D it's been RealD that has been mentioned. There is now a lot of talk about IMAX and I just wondered, in simple terms - what's the difference?

Do they look different on screen?
Which is better?
Do they use the same glasses?
How do you know which version your cinema is showing?

After checking the Cineworld website, the only thing that I can see that may distinguish between them is that some 3D films are showing as being shown in digital, whereas others are not.

IMAX 3D -

Analogue, but increasingly digital media.
Linear polarisation
Huge screens
Great sound
Usually have to give the huge glasses back

Essentially leaRAB to a better overall 3D effect and overall experience - but the picture quality is generally seen to be slighltly poorer due to the frame rate being less, so fast motion can be jerky. You also need to keep your head very much straight to be able to see the 3D effect.

REAL D

Digital media
Cirlcular polarisation.
Limited to the cinemas screen and sound system
Smaller glasses which you tend to be able to keep and take with you again.

Doesn't provide as great a 3D effect as IMAX - but the picture quality better due to higher frame rates making fast motion much smoother. Unlike IMAX, you can move your head about in any which way and still get the 3D effect.


As if it wasn't varied enough - there's a newer format of 3D that has been developed called Dolby 3D, however i don't know much about that, nor have i seen anywhere in the UK that has adopted it yet - although i'm lead to believe it's the best system yet.
