Image Gallery is scrambled after SD card upgrade

I don't know if this is the best place to post this question; if anyone knows a better place, I'll be happy to move it there.

Anyway, I have a G1 (currently running CyanogenMod 4.2.10.1, but when this happened I was still running the stock OTA 1.6 ROM). About a month ago, I replaced the factory 1GB SD card with an 8GB card. I copied all of the data from the old card to the new one, and everything seemed to work fine. But when I went into the Gallery app, I found that all of my pictures were out of order. They seemed to be completely randomized.

At first, I thought I had overwritten the file timestamps when copying them from the fat32 SD card partition to my laptop's ext3 and back again to fat32 on the new card. But that's not the case. All of the JPG files have the correct timestamps; I can even mount the card on my computer, open the image folder in Dolphin, and sort the files by date, and they all appear in the correct order (i.e., the order in which I took them).

But not in the Gallery on the phone. They are in no discernible order. I have tried playing with the Gallery settings -- changing the sort order from "Newest First" to "Newest Last" and back again, turning on and off "Shuffle Slides". Nothing works. I have also checked the EXIF data on a few of the JPG files to make sure they still contain the correct dates, and they do.

I'm completely out of ideas. Has anyone else had this problem? Any ideas how to fix it? This really sucks, because I have over 300 pictures on my phone.

The DCIM folder is a mess, it really doesn't have any real qualities like you'd expect coming from a windows computer.
It happens.

Looking at my pictures on my phone... the Gallery app seems to be finding all images on my phone, not just the ones in DCIM. It seems to be doing them in the order they appear on the file system by filename (i.e. alpha-numerically, folders first). So, the first image it finds in the first folder is displayed first. The last image in the root folder is displayed last.

You could try deleting the thumbnail caches. There are two places to try looking. In the folders that contain images, there may be a cache folder. Also try Home -> Menu -> Settings -> Applications -> Application settings -> Gallery -> Clear Data / Clear Cache
