I'm writing a free verse peom for school. Am I doing it right?

Elie’s family was important to him. He cared for his father when he was ill.
He saw death almost every day. But in some way, he was not scared to die.
He was brave. He knew he was living on the lines of life and death, but he didn’t think about that.
In the beginning, all he thought about was bread, soup, and his family.
He saw children and adults being burnt, hanged, shot, and frozen to death.
His job was to load stones into a truck. He was happier working then sitting around in his block.
He did not give up. He kept running when they told him to run.
When the violin was played, it soothed him. It comforted him.
Him and his father stuck together and kept each other going.
