im watching man vs. wild.....?

ok so i just started watching this show a few minutes ago. he is trying to fish, he made his own spear and everything. but the thing i am having trouble comprehending is, he used a live crab as bait so he could try to spear a fish, why didn't he just eat the crab?

seems kind of stupid to me, he had food but threw it into the water so he could TRY to catch food.
