I'm Too Young To Be This Sore!!! HELP!!!

I am wondering what in the world might be wrong with me...

My legs, arms and low back are so painful it makes me want to cry..I can't take any more!!

Sometimes, also the pain is in mid-back and shoulders, but this is much rarer.

The thing that I don't understand is...I bowl in a league, 3 games total a week, and throw a 14-pound ball, and I'm fine...but just 5 minutes of standing, or walking in a mall or something, and I'm ready to cry, the pain is so bad!!

I went clothes shopping recently, and there was nowhere to sit, not even in the dressing rooms, and after 15 minutes, my legs and low back were SO SORE from standing I absolutely had to sit down, and wound up sitting on the floor, near tears.

I had to have my mom go around and look for some clothes for me while I sat...I could not bear to continue standing.

I'm 39 years old, 5 foot 10, probably about 300 pounds, but I'm still way too young to be as sore and achy as I am...I should not feel this old!!

What the hell could be wrong with me? for the first time in my life I'm truly frightened enough to be motivated into DOING SOMETHING about this, if only I know what is wrong, and what I can do to improve this condition.

I'm not expecting any miracle cures, it probably took me a long time of unhealthy habits to get the way I am...but I want to know what's wrong...how I can help myself, and how not to hurt myself worse in the process.

I don't have insurance so seeing a doctor is out of the question. Can anyone tell me what might be wrong? anyone else have a similar problem?

P.S. I am 39 years old, postmenopausal, and not on any hormones, either..and don't want to be, they are a cancer risk. Especially since I smoke....which, yes, I know I shouldn't do.

But are there some ideas out there for any recommended excercises that are low-impact that might help me get some relief? and any foods I should add or subtract from my diet in order to possibly help with these symptoms?

Please, serious replies only, I am begging for help at this point...it just is not right that my 63 year old mom seems to be in better shape than I am!!

Kalisiin,

I had a similar experience several years ago... I had terrible pain in my left leg and lower back while standing for even short periods of time (5-10mins). It was a dull, throbbing kind of pain that just kept building and building until I couldn't take it anymore and needed to sit down and let it subside.

I was able to do other tasks without much discomfort: walking, even some jogging. I finally had enough after going mountain biking one day, and when i finished my back was so sore I could barely stand up.

Turned out I had a hip bursitis, which occured when trying to lift a heavy object at work. Mine was so bad that it put my back out of alignment. I went to physical therapy for about three months, and slowly the pain went away. Today I'm fine.

It's possible that bowling, and the use of the bowling ball, may be contributing to the pain. Or maybe you can think of some other recent event that may have led to over-exerting yourself.

For me, I found that strengthening the muscles in my lower back helped significantly. You can accomplish this by doing simple floor exercises. The two recommended to me by my physical therapist:

1. Lay down on your back, legs bent in a sit-up style position. Use your legs to lift your mid-section off the ground. Hold it for several seconds, and lower it back to the floor. Repeat.

2. Lay down, legs straight out. Alternate raising one leg at a time off the ground, hold, and then lower back to the ground. Repeat.

Of course, this won't replace actual physical therapy, but it is better than doing nothing. And, like most things, a healthy diet and regular exercise will do wonders for your body as well. Good luck!

I wish I did!!

No pool at home...and, right now, I'm traveling on business, in the South...and the damned hotel pol is not yet open...I was hoping it would be.

I talked to a friend about this who works part-time at a gym (and I won't go to a gym, the buff people there...I just know they are staring at this big blob in their midst, which is me...) and she suggested I might be suffering from low potassium.

My symptoms DO seem a bit better since I have been on the road for the past five days now, so I'm also wondering if something in my usual home environment might be contributing...does anyone know what excessive radon in a home might cause? I do know I live in PA...a high radon area, and our home has never been tested for it, po\lus we have well water.

My friend also suggested some similar stretching exercises, which seem to help a little, I started them last night, and actually feel a bit better, last night's sleep was better, and I woke up this morning in not quite as much pain as I had been.

Then, too, the bowling could also have something to do with it, since I did not bowl this week due to my travel.

I'm pretty sure, because of this trip,,,that there is something in my normal routine...or normal environment, which is contributing to the problem, since I do feel somewhat better out here on the road, out of town, and away from my usual routine and environment.

Any other ideas/suggestions, or comments? Anyone able to help out here? I appreciate all serious suggestions, because I truly am motivated, finally, to do something about this, because I cannot go on this way...it's just too painful, and I can't imagine another 39 years of living like this, or not even another year!!

You also need to stop smoking. This isnlt doing any favors to your lungs. Also, you need to cut back on whatevery junk food you are eatsing so you can start to lose weight. My suggestion would be to try weight watchers. If you don't want to go to a group, try it on line. One of the gals in my office has lost 90 lbs. on it. You just have to decide that you are going to do it.
