im thinking of buying a single speed bike. Will this be good for commuting?

i had a racing bike until some woman decided to knock me off it! but i fancy a single speed. my commute is about 4 miles each way, with a few hills and one is fairly steep. pros and cons would be helpful. I have a budget of £400 so suggestions on which to buy would help.
