I'm thinking of backpacking through South America for about?

a year. I think this would be more fun than just moving there. So can anyone suggest any good books for me or have any advice?

I will also be taking my 7 year old with me so anyone that has done this would be great.

Anyone know of anyone that has done it with children? I homeschool so that is not a problem!
