It doesn't have to. Personally, I lived in the dorms my first year and in an apartment the following years. I've had many friends who commute and I'll share with you what they told me. Basically, it is more difficult to meet people when you commute. When you live in a dorm, it's easier to get to know people because you're living with them (of course). You might feel like alone at first so you need to find a way to get to know people.
I highly suggest you get involved in a club, organization, sorority....just get involved some way some how. It is a great way to get to know people and soon you'll have more friends then you can count.
You have many years ahead of you so if you don't live in the dorms your first year, don't worry. You'll have plenty of other chances to have the freedom of not living with your parents. You'll still party and share in the excitement/fun that college can bring.
If that's not enough, think of the money you'll be saving...I could've saved thousands if I commuted from home but I can't because I live way too far.
Best of luck...
