I'm really out of shape, any advice? (mountain biking)?

I recently picked up mountain biking. I've only gone three times, but I know I'm going to stick with it.

However, there were many hard, technical, steep hills, which made realize how extremely out of shape I am! My arms and legs even got tired going down some of the downhills - something I didn't expect.

So for all you mountain bikers out there, what do you do to stay in shape? I really want to be able to make it up these hills without having to get off and walk up the hill (the walking was excruciating too)
