I'm over 300lbs and I want to buy a bicycle, how would I go about choosing a bike?

Since you're limited on a budget, you're limited to a used bike. You can definitely stop by a bike shop for advice, and they can show you what type of bike to look for. Typically, with your weight the main concern is the wheels. Make sure they are straight and true, and for frames its better to get one without shocks especially one in the rear. Do not get department store bikes, since they will not last long. Make sure the bike fits you and have the seat, handlebar, etc adjusted properly for your height.

Hope this helps.

I would suggest you get a Nirve single speed then. It will hold your weight and you wont find much new anyway for your budget as it is. $250 puts you on the lower end of the bike shop scale. You do NOT want to buy anything from a dept store as none will hold your weight very well at all and will be junk! See here for a Nirve: http://www.performancebike.com/bikes/Product_10052_10551_1027041_-1_45500_20000_45502 I would suggest you find a way to come up to $300 at least to give yourself more options....$250 doesnt get much at any bike shop!
