I'm not much of a car guy but...how can i get a lower tone out of my muffler.?

Like the header says i'm not much of a car guy. But, i would like to get a lower tone out of my chevy cobalt 05. Without breaking my wallet I'm thinking 300 dollars or less if that possible. I've been looking at muffler tips. Will some muffler tips change the tone of my muffler? I would appreciate any advice.
