I'm looking to make my own music on my computer, what kind of equipment should I buy?

I'm looking to experiment with making music on my computer. I'm attracted to the idea of using MIDI and pro tools seems like a fairly good option. I also have my eye on a $250 keyboard that is compatible with pro tools and also can serve as a MIDI controller. I'm looking to experiment with making completely electronic music, as well as making backing tracks and putting guitar and vocals over them. I'm wondering if anyone who has done this, or preferably does this on a regular basis has any suggestions for both equipment and software that I could/should use. If this helps at all I have some experience doing at home recordings with sony acid, but not using MIDI. I also have a general grasp on music theory. I've been writing my own music for 4 or so years now and have played guitar drums and bass all to some extent.
