...only 1 bike. Suggestions? I know the 250's out there are supposed to be good for learning, but i think im a little big for that. Plus i only want to end up buying 1 bike, not buying a bike and then having to trade it in for something that id be more ready for. I was almost laughed at when i considered buying a used rx-10. but i want something big and powerful. i realize they're deathtraps if you try to use all their power before you're truly comfortable, and know what you're doing. but i WILL want that power down road. would a 750 be able to go 160mph+ with a 300 pounder riding it? i need any help i can get!

The man said sportbike ozigirl :) You are a big guy bro!(I can still take you on do..:). So you only whant to buy one bike ehh, I will first respond to that by saying you are one risktaking guy becuase i know you are refering to a very powerfull bike from the get-go! I have myself ask't what type of bike i should get in yahoo answeres, I am considering a 1000cc but have one year experience. Thats all the time I needed to find out it is possible for someone to start off on a 1000+ supersport bike but not fisable! nor to great of an idea!! Never the less you should look into a Yamaha YZF-R1 year 2005 on_very powerfull(180hp)/great looking bike that will satisfy your size and fill that void for speed you have in your heart!!(I got 198mph on one but my weight is 198!(ha!, I got my weight in speed) A ninja 250 is not!!! for you!!! A 750 will do but for your size and what type of power I! would want from the bike, its too small. Remember also you are your own triger, theis types of bikes do not!! forgive mistakes by their owners, treat this bike like if it were your only child!
safety section: *dont ride too close behind a semi: the fact the semi blocks the wind will make it seme as if the bike thrusts foward(less air resistence). *Ride a bit to the right of the lane: if a car is leaking oil it will fall in the middle of the lane_not ridingh to the left is retorical-passing cars will throw air that will push/suck the bike(especialy semi's. *Allways wear gear(cant stress enofh). *Drive as if every one is trying to kill you(very aware at all!! times). Safe riding:)

I ride a Yamaha FZ1 (1000cc) and I am 6'1" and 267lbs. I'm not sure what top speed is for her. But based on my experience and the information you have given I don't think anything smaller than 1000cc will meet your needs.

Being a beginner rider and a big dude at the same time is tough. I would definitely stay away from 600's as the riding position will be way too cramped for you, and they don't have a lot of bottom end torque to them anyways. You never said if you were going for a new bike or used. But personally, based on your size and height, I would go with either a 750 or an older used literbike. Maybe along the lines of a used GSX-R750, or ZX-7R or even a VFR750. For 1000 I'd go a little older, like maybe an old GSX-R1100 or an FZR1000 or something along those lines. You definitely don't want a new 1000 being a rookie as the new engines are pretty intense and aren't like the older mills of yesteryear. (Normally, I never even recommend a 1000 to a newbie, but your case is different) I'm sure a modern 750 with you on board will still be able to hit 160, but the bigger question is: where on earth do you think you would have the room to open it up for miles at a time to allow for that kind of speed?? And pleased don't get mixed up with the biker boyz & stunter crowd either, this will only turn you into road pizza. Hope I helped in some way.

I am 6', 200 lbs. Sportbikes are painful after more than 20 minutes. They are not designed to fit people like you or me. Look at Ryuichi Kiyonari, or Valentino Rossi. Sportbikes are built to fit them. And, they are in prime physical condition. You and I, real men in the real world, just don't fit on those things.

And I don't think you comprehend just how dangerous 140 hp and 100 ft-lb of torque on tap can be. My favorite mount, an 85' FJ1100, can hit 60 mph from a dead stop before I cross the intersection. That is slow compared to modern R class bikes. A modern R class bike, is so far beyond the average riders ability, that most street riders barley use a third of the bikes potential. And it is suicidal to give that kind of power to a beginner. These things are so smooth and so capable at speed, they lull you into a false sense of control. So when you think you are able, you find yourself in way over your head in a panic stop situation. Be sure to sign the donor section on your license.

Sure, they have gobs of power, but where can you use it? 160 mph is not that scary in a vette, but is scary on a machine that weighs 500 lbs.

And you can't expect to buy just one bike in your entire life. You are a beginner, you are going to drop it. It would behoove you to shop for a Maxim 650, or Nighthawk 650, anything along those lines. Something older, cheap and durable. You go out and drop 12k on a new ZX, you'll find out how expensive bodywork is to replace.

If you can find one look for a Yamaha FJ 1200 or an FJR 1300. I know it sounds like a lot of power, but they are a comfortable sports tourer with smooth power and enough grunt for someone your size and will still put a smile on your dial.
