...as a child? Here are some details I'm hoping will jog someone's memory into helping me know what book it is or who might've illustrated it:
1. Scottish fairytale
2. Housed in the children's fairytale section of the Arlington, TX Southwest branch library in the 1990s
3. All of the characters in this illustrated children's story have a specific plaid that they wear, including a white witch or fiary who has a white-based plaid.
4. The story is about a red-haired girl who saves a prince from a spell. She has to hold onto him while he turns into all sorts of ghastly things, including a Lion that tries to maul her, and if I remember correctly a flame that tries to burn her. If she doesn't let go, the spell is broken
5. The story was beautifully illustrated with bold colors, thick black outlines, and almost boxy appearance
6. The story revolved around the heroine with long, thick, curly red hair, and her relationship and eventual saving of the blonde prince.
