I'm looking for a BlackBerry...

I was on the BlackBerry website checking out their newest models, and it's just too much information ... which do you think is a best fit for a 2nd year college student at Kent State University who just wants to treat himself to a nice, more sophisticated phone.

Replies and suggestions are very much appreciated, thank you...

Dont get a blackberry, you can get a really nice PocketPC or Smartphone. They are more powerful than a blackberry, and as student, have more features that will appeal to you. Pocketpc features a camera MP3 player, tons more and better games than a blackberry, and lots of productivity software designed to help students. Without knowing which carrier you have it would be hard to suggest a device for you. But in my opinion the best one offered by a cell carrieer is the Cingular 8525.

Give us some more info on your needs, such as: do you send alot of email, text, do alot of surfing, need ability to edit word and excel files, camera, mp3, etc.

Suggesting a device really depends on what your needs are and how you plan on using the device. The newest models are the Pearl and the 8700c, since you are on Cingular.

Keep in mind, BBs are more business oriented devices. The BIS unlimited dataplan on Cingular is $29.99 plus a voice plan. The O/S is basically bulletproof, email is excellent, surfing is adequate as is voice quality. The 8700 has no camera nor can it do mp3s. I think the Pearl can however.

Yes, I would like to have the ability to send and recieve e-mail on my phone...

Yes, I do text on my current phone

Yes, I would like to have the ability to surf

No, I do not need the ability to edit Word and/or Excel files

Yes, a camera and an mp3 would be nice, also the ability to play real music, not ringtones, as the ringtone

Speakerphone and bluetooth would be nice as well, but not completely necessary...

*My carrier is Cingular

Thanks guys... I appreciate you cell-saavy guys narrowing things down for me

Sounds to me like you want a Blackjack, not a blackberry. but editing word docs might be real useful for a college kid. it is a lot easier to carry around then your laptop.

If its a BB, then the Pearl is only one to have a camera and mp3 player. It also uses SureType which, according to several posters on this site and the BB forum, takes some getting used to. The 8700 has QWERTY keyboard which makes typing much easier.

I agree with the previous poster that a Blackjack might be the better or the 8525 for that matter, especially if you find you need to edit word and excel files.

Hah, thanks guys, I appreciate your insight...

I just saw a commercial a couple minutes ago about the Blackjack, and I decided I wanted to get that... it's just funny how you guys mentioned it as well.

But I will check out the 8525 as well...

Thanks for all your help...

Also, just to make sure... does the Blackjack and the 8525 have the ability to edit Word and Excel documents?

No, only the 8525 has that capability. It is a PocketPC, while the Blackjack (though a very capable device) is a smartphone so it has some limitations. there is a recent thread in the Pocketpc section here about the differences between PocketPC and Smartphone.
