I'm learning a manual transmission, can I cause alot of damage to my car in doing so?

Learn to start off smooth and have total control of your vehicle before you try.The main thing is for you to have total control of your car at all times when driving.If it takes you 90 years to master it,so be it.

I have a fear that the car I just got can be damaged by learning to drive its stick transmission. I cringe every time I hear my gears grind, I stall out, or I lurch forward. I know these are things everybody does when they are learning, I just worry about hurting my car.

If you do it a lot, it is possible to cause damage. But hey, think of it as incentive to learn faster!
