It's shoulder length now and I really don't want to have to worry with it in boot camp. But at the same time I like my hair the way it is.

Your hair cant touch your collar in the navy boot camp. So if i were you i would have someone at home cut your hair instead of one of the hair butchers at boot camp.

It is your choice, ask some other Navy persons, they could advise
you much better. My son didn't but I do not know what gals did
or chose to do.

Good luck on your choice. I dated a girl that joined the navy and she did not cut her hair short. They did it when she got there. It was not an issue. I was in the Army and before I left we all got together in the hotel room and cut each other bald. We still had to go through the haircut line, so it did not matter for us. Basic is about fitting into a mold. They will get you there one way or another. I think that each step is just another way to break who you used to be, and mold you into who they want and need you to be. Suzy from the block wont do what she is asked to do, but GI Jane will. I saw a comic when I was in basic, a soldier asked his drill seargent why they were polishing the bottoms of their boots, as they just walked on them and noone ever saw the bottoms. The drills reply, was someday I am going to ask you to jump out of a perfectly good airplane, and I do not want you to ask my any questions. I think this sums up BASIC perfectly.

do it before..they will literally hack it off. at least you can have it styled beforehand.

when you go to bootcamp you will get a given number of chit's to use as currency. you then use these chits for your haircuts, save the chit's and give them to the person who gets butchered. Have your hair cut extra short before reporting so as to remove the need for a military barber. Once you are out of Boot you can always go where you want so long as its within regs. you might also go get waxed prior to boot because shaving is going to be in public.

Yep. Also, don't get layers. Get a simple, straight bob. Don't let them butcher your hair!

I'm in the Air Force; before I left for Basic I cut my hair short enough that it was about 2 inches above my collar. Your hair isn't allowed to touch your collar while you are in uniform, and you have a lot to do in the morning before formation, so it will generally make your life easier if you have the option of leaving it down and NOT getting chewed out for it.
I know you like your hair the way it is - but frankly, at Basic Military Training I know we girls didn't worry too much about how we looked... Heck, we were lucky if the TIs gave us enough time to shave, haha. Besides, in 2 months your hair will be back down to about your shoulders again. Who knows; you might even like it shorter!
