I'm having trouble with my transmission on my 02 ford ranger.?

I shift into drive but it just revs. I shift down to 2 and it'll get up to about 30-40 mph. I can then shift back to drive and get up to 45-50mph. after I stop though I gotta go back down to 2 to get moving again. I just added 2 qts of trans. fluid. Its automatic.
