I'm having trouble with MS Paint. Help?

I'm a fairly good user of this program, and I wanted to do some sprite edits.

Whenever I copy and paste a sprite (PNG), there's a black background. When I get rid of it, the sprite's outline is missing.

This is very frustrating. How can I get that blackness to go away?
