I'm having a major problem with an essay prompt for "The Great Gatsby". Please help!?

The essay prompt is: "Jay Gatsby was a man who devoted his life to a single, obsessive aspiration, with tragic consequences for himself and others. What is the fundamental human weakness that underlay his desire, and underlies all human desires? How did his childhood 'set him up' for this problem? How is this same process unfolding in our world today?" PLEASE HELP!! =[
