I'm going to buy a PS3 40gb system.?

Can I switch the 40gb drive with say a 320gb drive? I know it's a 2.5(laptop)Serial ATA hard drive, so I'll just buy a new drive and swap them, I'll be okay then right? Will that work? If so, how do I format the new hard drive? Do I need partitions?
