...I do to get fit? It's something like 8 hrs a day spent hiking with a heavy backpack. For 10 days.
My stamina is low and I'm not fit enough yet but I don't know what to focus on. Please help!
 
Start with walking. Start with a mile, then work your way up to as far as you have time for. You can also do stairs. Try to walk up and down a full flight of stairs at least ten times, as many times a day as you have time for (you may not be able to do ten at first, start off slow). After you get comfortable with both of these, start doing them with a pack. A few practice hikes in similar terrain (like on a weekend) would help, too.
