I like my cloth diapers. For a new baby, I agree with prefolds and covers. Cotton babies.com has a good "try it" kit with 6 prefolds and 2 covers for 30 $. I used a combo of those and disposables when my son was new. I have a stash of different pocket diapers, I do like the bum genius 3.0, but think that fuzzi bunz fit a bit trimmer. Lately I have been loving my all in ones I bought from a work at home mom. The sizes don't seem to be totally consistent..I bought some mediums that were a bit on the small size, but also had some that were perfect and fit both my 5 month old and my 21 month old. One thing I have noticed, if you go for sized diapers, mediums last the longest. My daughter has been in a medium from 6 months until now ( 21 mo). The WAHM made diapers were a lot cheaper than some of the others and so far seem to be doing the trick, and they are cute and made well, so I am overlooking the sizing issue. I just try them on my baby before I wash them to make sure I wont need to exchange them. And I like not having inserts to stuff and remove, although for night time or heavy wetters the pocket diapers really help because you can add extra absorbency as needed. The All in ones take longer to dry, but not to the point where it causes any inconvenience for me. Also, just know different diapers (cloth or disposable) will probably fit different babies differently. Jillians Drawers has a program where you can try a bunch of different brands and see what you like the best for only 10$, although I think you pay a deposit up front but its not bad, considering. I'll post the link to there, the WAHM diapers, and to cottonbabies.com, who really do have awesome products and great customer service. I have always been happy with them.
As far as other tips, if you use cloth diapers it is just so much easier to use cloth wipes. I just use gerber baby washcloths as wipes, wet them with water, wring them out and put them in the wipe warmer. The rougher side is great for getting big messes. And the you can just toss the wipe into the diaper and throw the whole thing into the pail. I use a diaper champ for my pail, lined with an old pillow case. At the end of the day I just toss it all into the wash and never have bags of smelly diapers to haul out to the trash, which is nice. We also find it easier for us to keep a small supply of disposable diapers and wipes on hand for when we go out. No matter if you CD part time or full time it still saves $$. Best of Luck, and congrats on your lil one on the way!
