I'm confused, when God talked to Moses about the 10 commandments.?

the 6th commandment said

"thou shall not kill"
but Christians seem to ignore that one.

But i dont understand, if Moses was writing exactly what God said
Then God himself said " do not kill"
but how is it that people work around that verse.?
