I'm confused about what to do here...my exercise upsets the downstairs neighbors?

I live in an upstairs apartment and the carpet is really thin and the floorboards creak underneath when you walk around.

Now I've been trying to lose weight recently and bought a treadmill. But whenever I use it, the strides I make on it make the floor creak. So now whenever I work out, I get the downstairs neighbor banging on the ceiling to get me to shut up. Yesterday I found out they called the building manager and reported my excessive noise.

I can't afford a monthly gym membership, which is why I got the treadmill for my apartment. And I can't go out and exercise because I live in the inner city and the neighborhood is not so great, not to mention I don't own a car and I use public transportation, so going to a park or something is not practical. I'd have to work out in the park and then get on the bus to ride home all exhausted and sweaty...that's not something I wanna do.

Should I just ignore the neighbors down there and keep using the treadmill? It's not my fault the floor creaks with the slightest movement, it creaks even when I just walk around. I can't help that, and I have a right to use the treadmill I bought and strive to be fit, right?
