I'm 6 foot 240 lbs. Is the R1 good first bike for me?

Any liter bike is just plain stupid for a beginner. You can't be serious asking this. It doesn't matter how big you are. An extra 50lbs won't matter with a bike that powerful. It's hard to control. You can go plenty fast with a smaller bike until you learn how to ride properly.
 
First of all no. second of all dirt bikes wont help you. I learned how to shift and brake a bike in 30 minutes, don't fool yourself. An R1 is way to much for a beginner, you will kill yourself if you don't know how to handle one and obviously you don't. If you want a supersport get a 600, don't go for the R6 it sucks for the streets. I would suggest getting a v-twin like the sv650 or ninja 650 because they have better power delivery and is more predictable, but still very fast. but the fact that you're considering an R1 in the first place makes me believe 1. you will be a squid and 2. you won't be convinced

If you do get an R1, get ready to be raped by insurance. dont care if you kill yourself just dont kill me or my momma. Thanks :D
 
I'm a short guy and ride a busa... feels great...i have a friend about your size that rides a R1... he loves it.. try several before you buy though.
