This was great. It would also be good for you to read poetry by Shakespeare, Yeats, Paul Luarence Dunbar, Emily Dickinson, Robert Frost, etc. In order for you to be a good poet, you must read good poetry. Pay homage to those who have come before you and have paved the way. Give respect to your predecessors. My personal favorite poet is Paul Laurance Dunbar with Shakespeare as a close second,, they influence my very own poetry above all others. I can feel the sincerity in your poem which is fantastic. You are off to a good start. And please do not listen to the answer above me. Poetry can sound beautiful if it has a rhyme scheme or if it is prose, which is poetry without rhyme. Rhyming can be a fun way of challenging yourself to think of words in order to give your poem extra zest and appeal. Some people may not like rhyme, but that doesnt mean you should refrain from rhyming. Find out what works for you but most of all follow your heart, because true poetry comes straight from the heart. Read poetry, write poetry, live poetry, dream poetry.

God bless,

My Nightmare

I laid down in bed,
I began to count sheep,
I rested my head,
but I just couldn't sleep.

Then I began to drift,
then sleeping so deep,
My weight began to shift,
as I had a dream.

I was with you,
so happily ever.
It felt too real,
then turned to a disaster.

You left me & my heart.
It was just a nightmare,
as you tore me apart,
you found a new affair.

Still asleep yet I cried,
and then came the screams.
I had dreamt you died,
and those were bad dreams.

I woke up and tried to forget it.
I just loved you more and more each day,
don't leave me & you won't regret it.
Because we have never felt this way.

So your opinion? Do you like it? Tell me everything.

I stopped when I realized it rhymed. Doctor Suess only works with rhymes, I personally hate any poem that rhymes heavily, maybe if it does a little rhyming or very sublte rhymes like half-rhymes or something but if its a full on rhyme... no it doesn't interest me, it makes the peom seem more childish to me, maybe its just cause I read Doctor Suess when I was a kid. So first piece of advice/opinion DON'T MAKE IT RHYME, of course thats my opinion, you can do whatever you want, but as the reader, I don't like it.
