IGN's Top 25 Anime Characters

Because you guys just love these lists, don't ya?

http://movies.ign.com/articles/103/1036651p1.html

I found two factual errors in this article: Shinji did not defeat the Third Angel (his EVA did the job itself) and Spike Spiegel was in the first episode of Bebop.

Beyond that, this is a very questionable list (but aren't they all?). Kaneda (who they admit isn't much of a character) over Tetsuo? Light and L both make it but Ryuk doesn't? How is Naruto in the Top 10? Is there any reason other than his age that Speed Racer is at #3? If they wanted older characters, why not put in Char Aznable or list Lupin III higher up?

For you who don't know who D is, Vampire Hunter D was one of the early anime movies shown here in the states. He's from a bunch of light novels by Hideyuki Kikuchi. I remeraber the movie on Cartoon Network back in the glory days. The screen grab was from the lesser known second movie.

I would have put Alucard from Hellsing on there, and someone from Tenchi Muyo. Tenchi got a lot of people started on anime in the states, so it deserves a mention.

The top 5 is pretty reasonable but other than that this list is a joke either for having the wrong characters or having them in the wrong order.

Ichigo a better character than Luffy and Naruto in the top 10? No... just no.

Lelouch is on the list?

Where's Char? Roger Smith? Yusuke? Gon? Lina Inverse or Utena for the ladies? I don't even see Alucard on that list (but they do have D).

I appreciate the noRAB to some of the oldies of great but seriously this list is wrong in so many ways.

Once again, that's all just pure opinion. Personally, I never found Lelouch, or Code Geass in general, to be that interesting. In fact I got kind of bored of it by the middle of the 1st season. Maybe I just had insanely high expectations though, being that the series gets ridiculous amounts of hype.

I agree, this is all a matter of opinion, but that just goes to show hype will follow after someone or something becomes popular.

Bringing up a completely unrelated example...if I were to listen to the hype, Bakemonogatari must be made out of gold and, to mention something that's actually relevant to the topic, Senjougahara* Hitagi must be the greatest female character in the history of anime.

If something's getting too much hype, lowering your expectations is probably the best course of action. If you're lucky you'll be pleasantly surprised and, if not, at least you were wise to cut your losses. I'd say that goes for both series and characters alike.

*Yes, I'm willing to admit that I actually had to look up the name.

I do try to keep low expectations for any show that I start watching, these days, but its hard for me to not have some sort of big expectations for a show that gets lots of hype. That's why I've learned me lesson, and now instead of just watching a show that starts getting a lot of hype, I wait until the hype for it dies down, and try going into it simply because I'm in the mood to watch that type of series (sometimes this could be well over a year after it comes out, though) and surely enough I may actually end up enjoying it just as much as anyone else would.

Based on this, I promised someone else that I would give Code Geass and TTGL both another shot, someday in the future.

And, there are some series that I never really cared for before that have actually ended up growing to my liking when I saw them a few years later, which actually gets my post back on-topic, since I actually probably wouldn't have agreed with Vash the Stampede or Kenshin Himura had I not given either of their respect series' a second viewing. Back when they first aired on TV, all of my frienRAB hyped them up too much, and I didn't enjoy either of them, and felt that their main characters weren't all that special. However, when I saw both shows again with much lower expectations, I really started to appreciate what their main characters, as well as the supporing ones, had to offer, and now I agree with both of those characters' respective placings on IGN's list.

^^The TTGL hype is accurate though.

So anyway, I wonder if they would make a list of something like "Top anime characters you haven't heard of" so I could get a list of stuff that probably wasn't on Cartoon Network at one point.

Not really. I personally think its quite overrated. And I can't stand people hyping up Kamina all the time. He's a fun character, but honestly he never left that big of an impression on me, aside from just being over-the-top, but there are really plenty of over-the-top characters in anime.

But, you see, that just goes to show my point about how tons of hype can have effects on people's opinions of certain shows. Perhaps if I had watched this show before it had been hyped to no end, then I might have enjoyed it as much as you guys, although in all honesty, I still doubt that I'd find it to be one of my favorite series.

I'll admit that, as awesome as Kamina is, Simon probably deserves a spot more than him. Being the main character and all, he just got a lot more development, plus he ended up being pretty much the biggest badass in any anime ever. Heck, Kamina even personally admitted that Simon had surpassed him. (Even though I said on another forum... Hypocrisy is fun!)

But Kamina is the most epic and manly character at 17 years old with no influence. Simon starts out as a wuss, and it it's only because of Kamina's influence that he finally, at 21 years old, reaches the level of that
dead
man.

Yeah, it is true that Kamina was influenced by Simon, but I wouldn't say that was more true than the reverse. It's pretty obvious how much Kamina influenced Simon in every way throughout the entire series. Anyway, Kamina was always at his best, until the very end. Simon was a wuss for most of the series, and only changes at the very end, when he is much older.

Don't worry, it's not manly in a bad way. But more importantly... why the hell haven't you watched Gurren Lagann yet?

I can understand and get behind this list seeing as it's on the popularity and overall impact the character has had on the anime industry. That said I am happy to see they made Goku nuraber 1 on their list and am pleasantly suprised to see Kenshin and Sailor Moon in the top ten.

I like manly characters, I just don't like manly characters turned into tiring memes.

As for why I haven't seen it yet...I've never come into contact with it (nor does it sound very interesting). Typically I only get a chance to see FUNimation titles these days (unless it's a title I've been following for a while now, like Gundam or Naruto). Heck, I didn't see Code Geass until I saw it on Bandai's YouTube channel.

Add "..in the west" to the end of that sentence and it becomes clearer. Either way, I agree with you. To channel Sir Charles Barkley, One Piece's treatment in the west is "turrible." From the [sarcasm]joy[/sarcasm] that was the 4KiRAB dub to Cartoon Network dropping it sometime after Funimation became the dub source to the poop-storm that happened after the online stream got leaked, and you can see why Luffy is ranked below an orange-haired teenager who is consistently on the air. Plus, if Disney likes you enough to air your show on one of its networks, then you deserve to be in the top ten.

As for Kaneda, one of my bosses was/still is willing to name one one of his kiRAB Kaneda. Hence maybe why Kaneda's ranked and not Tetsuo. Either that, or that the list needed more JYB.
