If you're publishing a book, how much should you pay the illustrator for the cover art?

I just finished writing my novel (my first one! Let's hope it gets published) and I sent the synopsis to a literary agency. Anyway, my one friend wants to do the cover art for it, and I don't know how much he should be paid. It's still in question whether or not it'll be published at all, but if it is, how much should I pay him for the cover art?
 
The publishing company will work that out, and (maybe) give you a few choices to choose from. When you sent your novel in, just sent the writing. People don't usually send it in together with the cover. If, however, you just want to send the novel around to a few friends/family and you want a cover with it, then you don't have to pay your friend unless you want to. Maybe just take him out to his favorite place for dinner as a thank you or something. :)
