How would you feel if your child was considered the weaker player on a team and they were sitting out a lot and getting upset over that even though they enjoy the sport? Do you think coaches should play the stronger players more and sit the weaker players? At what age level do you think it becomes ok for a coach to do this? Meaning maybe you believe at a younger age level that's not right but once children are at a certain level you could understand them doing that?
If a coach was sitting your child out a lot and you asked them why because it was upsetting your child and the coach basically told you that your child was the weaker player on the team and because there is score, standings and play offs, he feels a responsibility to try and win some games and so he tries to keep the more skilled players on the field as much as possible, as well as give all the players a chance to play and improve, what would your response be?
For the record, I'm not talking about my own child. Although I have been the parent of the "weaker" player and also the parent of the "more skilled" player at one time or another. There is a mom who's son is on my son's team (age 13-16 group) and she is always complaining about her son sitting out. She told me that she asked the coach and that was his basic response (I don't remember everything she said he told her). She is thinking about pulling her son off the team. I just wonder what others thought and how they would respond. Her son likes playing the sport but is always feeling down about being the one kid who sits more than anyone and she feels it's affecting his self esteem.
as for try outs and such, they have a try out but everyone makes it. The try out is just so the coaches can do a draft for the kids they want. The coach probably had this kid as his last pick. It costs $125 to sign the kids up and everyone who signs up plays. This is little league. There is a high school team where they have a try out and you either make it or you don't but the situation I am talking about is with the little league.
