Another waty to think of it is not giving him the money, but investing the money in him. If it were my brother, I would do it, but.... As soon as he has learned to be a mechanic...... he will be paying me back the debt by working on my car for the rest of his life or mine (whichever comes first) for free!!!!! Over the years, the investment I make in him will benifit both of us and may many times over what it cost me to invest in him learning a trade.
