If you shoot someone with an unlicensed gun in self defense, can you still

be charged with something? What if you have an unlicensed gun in your house, that you bought off the street and someone is armed on your property and you shoot them? Can you still be charged with murder of some sort, even though it was self defense with your unlicensed gun? I'm just wondering and no, I do not plan on owning a gun. I hate guns. Thank you
