If you have Bluetooth turned on but it's not in use, does it still drain your battery?

I have it turned on, on my iPhone, but the symbol at the top is darkened, where when its actually in use the symbol is white. If I keep it on, will it still drain my battery or should I go to my settings and turn it off?
