With the Canadian jail system overcrowded fights are inevitable. There are many cases where an inmate may be forced to defend himself. I'm just wondering of they press charges in these instances, or if they just throw the combatents in solitary confinement. Obviously most of these fights happen out of the gaurds view and my thought is that it would be hard to conclusively prove whether or not it was self defence in most instances. And without conclusive evidence you would think they wouldn't lay charges.

If they have clear evidence, and it was an unprovoked attack, they can lay charges, or impose administrative penalties (solitary, or revocation of privileges).

Otherwise, you're free to beat the crap out of each other.
