If you don't know when your period is coming when should you test?

I have a 13 month old and haven't menstruated since the initial bleeding after his birth. I have been having symptoms for about a week but nothing crazy ( could be my period returning ) Think it would be ok to test now or should I wait?
No STDs I was checked when I was pregnant
