If you did something you thought was right, but then you felt awful about it?

Not necessarily. I think more than likely you just feel bad that your action hurt someone else. It doesn't mean you're wrong, it just means you have empathy. Like when you have to discipline a child for instance, even though you know it's the right thing, it tears you up inside to have to do it. (I don't mean spank, just like sit on the "naughty chair" etc : )
 
It's good to stand up for yourself but perhaps what you are feeling is that you did it in an insensitive way, or what you stood up about was really a mistake.
If you did something mean or acted up in order to stand up for yourself, you could have gone about it in a calm way. Just remember it for the future.
If you think on it and feel that you defended something that you really did wrong, apologize.
