You can't add to God's word, but God can. He still speaks to us through the Holy Spirit.

i do believe the "excuse" is that all the words in the bible that come after this verse are the true words of God thus they were not added.. well they were but not by anyone but God, even though they were written by men that only say they are the words of God. OMG it's sooo confusing!
