If you buy a phone for Verizon or AT&T on eBay, do you still need to pay a deposit?

I have wanted to go with Verizon or AT&T for awhile now, and I was wondering if I bought a used phone on eBay if I'd be able to get service with them without having to pay a huge deposit or having to sign a two year contract.
