My fiance is 23 years old. His mother has had an ongoing medical condition that has made her legally incompetent. She has also abused drugs and alcohol for most of her adult life. That didn't help her condition either. Because he is her oldest son, he has filed for legal guardianship. (His mother and father are divorced. And he hasn't seen his father since he was 9. He has no idea where his father is and he doesn't care to know either.)
Now here's the kicker, my fiance and his mother have become estranged due to her drug related habits and she wouldn't sign the FASFA forms even if she was in her right mind. Now that he is her legal guardian and she is legally incompetent, can he qualify for financial aid? (As in, can he no longer be considered a dependant?)
