If we can connect MySQL with PHP directly, then what is the need for ODBC?

Thanks Kasey, but I found somewhere that people use ODBC to connect MySQL with PHP. Why is this so?
What is the need to use ODBC(in case of MySQL+PHP) if we can connect MySQL with PHP directly?
