If someone was wrongly convicted?

And does the death penalty actually act as a deterrent? Your view please.

The death penalty in my opinion is not a punishment and obviously it won't teach anyone a lesson. I believe that criminals who commit crimes that would bring up the thought of death penalty should instead just be put in a jail cell. Yes, they'll be sitting all day doing nothing.. which could be considered as a decent life. But, years on end of sitting in a box is better than them getting the easy way out and dying.

crime percentage will be much less, as criminals will think a lot before committing any crime, u said what about wrongly convicted ppl, am with u but what the percentage the one who is wrongly convicted will also serve time in prison too , but a huge percent of innocent ppl will be spared.

If someone was put to death and then found to be innocent they would get a pardon - so their name would be cleared but they'd still be dead, very useful. Their family would probably get a huge payout too.

No the death penalty isn't a deterrent, as proved by America alone.

Its not a deterrent, just look at the U.S. and Apartheid South Africa which had the highest murder rates on the planet despite widespread use of the death penalty.

All bringing back the death penalty would do is salve the deceased families need for revenge, and result in innocent people being hung for crimes they didn't commit.

It hasn't acted as a deterrent in the past here and in the USA it still doesn't. I am more in favour of corporal punishment and life meaning life. The prison system is too soft, prisoners have TVs, 3 meals a day, they jump the waiting list and queues in our hospital, they have the best of recreation facilities, if they were made to serve a sentence instead of a prolonged holiday it would be a start

Yes it is a deterrent! Murders have increased by around 500% since hanging was abolished in this country. A single case where an offender was wrongly hanged tipped the balance now our streets are bloodstained and our jails full of murderers who will back out to add to the bloodshed in two or three years. The death penalty should be brought back forthwith! (and the EU can go and take a running jump)

i am actually all for the death penalty
we discussed this at university a couple of years back. when there is no confession and we are not sure 100% that the crime took place then the criminal should just be imprisoned.
however for people like joseph fritzl who locked his daughter for 24 years, raped her 3000 times and fatherd her 7 children bring it back!

The first thing to happen is that a lot more police and bystanders would be killed. If you're going to swing for a crime anyway, there's no incentive to come quietly: you might as well try to shoot your way out.

You answered my question & you were so right. It isn't a deterrent in my opinion because look at America.
Look at the ammount of people who have wrongly been convicted as well.
Also, it isn't justice. I wouldn't feel any justice if someone was given the death sentence. It is an easy option or revenge.
I do believe that prison needs to be rehabilitating but at the same time it needs to be harsh. People who are in need of help need to recieve this (abuse victims who have gone on to commit crimes, long suffering men & women who have just "snapped", children who are committing crimes).
HOWEVER, I feel that you can't keep offering help because if someones receiving help then reoffends again and again, they are not co-operating.
It's hard because there are so many grey areas.
