If water in foundation causes nasty odor, how long will smell last after put soil...

...around house & start dehum? The latest theory on the nasty smell (a rotting vegetable sort of smell) coming from our basement is that maybe it is related to water leaking into the foundation. Two weeks ago we put soil around the edges of the basement, and two days ago we started a new dehumidifier. How long after beginning to dehumidify can we expect it to take before the smell stops being strong enough to waft upwards through the floorboards and vents?

Enough of it comes up into certain rooms, including the one we spend most of our time in, that I can't even sit and eat in those rooms, and I wondered how long this is going to be an issue. Since other rooms are not painted and trimmed they aren't set up for living in yet and so I'm kind of stuck in the stinky room most of the time!

(Regarding my previous questions, I thought it was sewer gas because it gets worse when we shower or flush upstairs, but on a recent hike I have finally experienced that lovely treat and and although we did get the lite-version of that from some unprimed sink traps we finally found and dealt with, the main culprit over the last few months continues and is different- a strong, organic odor that wafts up from the basement.)
