If viruses and bacteria that make us sick are mutating always...?

why can't they mutate into something that doesn't have such an effect on us for once? into something that'll only give us headaches if we catch it for ex....Now, they are constantly getting worse.

If they are getting stronger every year, will there be a deadly pandemic of the stomach virus, influenza, and the common cold in the future? Is this going to be the leading cause of death?
