If the sole purpose of the US military is to defend and protect its citizens then

why do neocons? support a war of aggression? (i.e. nation building)? Since when does establishing democracy in the middle east by use of force qualify as defending the United States?
Did the fouding fathers intend for the US to have its troops stationed in almost every country and sticking its head in other countries' business?
