i know he's a lord but so is/was the guy who leads the watch (his son is now with danni and the dothraki after fleeing from justice when he sold slaves illegally) and he wasn't allowed to leave to clean up his sons mess and get his house back in order even though he joined out of his own free will not because he committed a crime
